IT Audit: To get, or not to get? That is the question.

Posted On: 05 / 09 / 2017

IT Audits can sound a little intimidating, right? But the reality is that they`re arguably one of the best things you can do for your business.

What is this IT Audit you speak of?

IT Audits are a means of checking & evaluating the overall health of your current IT environment. They give you an insight into how your tech is performing, the suitability of your ICT Infrastructure in supporting your current business operations and future goals, and the reliability of your company’s security and backup measures. An IT Audit answers the important question: is tech going to help drive my business progression, or just get in the way?

The basic intention of an IT Audit is ensuring the hardware, software and applications that manage your business functionality are well-suited, efficient & reliable. It’s important that businesses are aware of any potential weaknesses or drawbacks in their technology environment, as we’ve seen first-hand that poorly suited tech will almost certainly delay, if not halt your goals all together, as well as cost your business precious time, resources and money – when that just doesn’t need to be the case.

Reasons to get an IT Audit:

  1. If you’re experiencing ‘pain’ with usability and are unable to determine the root cause of the issue.
  2. You’re planning on expanding your business and want to ensure the ICT Infrastructure you have in place will support your growth.
  3. If you’re continuing to have issues with your current provider and want to see how they’re stacking up.
  4. You or your staff are constantly repeating set tasks or processes that could be automated, or you’re looking for strategic direction on how to leverage tech for greater business efficiency.
  5. You’re onboarding with a new IT Provider, and they need to know exactly what they’re working with and how they can help you best.

How does it work?

Generally speaking, an IT Audit is a three-step process:

  1. Discovery:  During this initial stage, IT companies set out to gain a better understanding of your business operations and procedures by speaking with you and your people. They aim to learn how you operate on a day-to-day basis, any frustrations or inconveniences you experience with usability, and any future goals you’re trying to achieve. After the ‘people’ side of things, comes the ‘tech’ side of things, where by your technology environment is looked into, both by manual investigation and utilising software to obtain data. Areas explored here include:
    • Cloud, Server and endpoint devices,
    • Network & wireless infrastructure,
    • Power protection,
    • Backup & business continuity,
    • Patching & cybersecurity,
    • Software applications & licensing,
    • Internet, email and communications, and
    • Web domains and hosting.
  2. Analysis: Next up is analysing everything found during the discovery phase. This is a critical phase as it links any user pain to current infrastructure deficiencies. It also clearly shows any issues surrounding lack of productivity, security, efficiency, general usability, and even client dissatisfaction.
  3. Reporting: Results from the analysis phase are then given to you in a report format. This report sets out the IT Audits findings to help you better understand your tech environment so you can clearly see what’s working, and where there’s room for improvement. Within the report will be a detailed recommendations section that clearly sets out the steps you can take (and their priority status), to improve your business technology to better accommodate your operations now, and in future.

What are the benefits?

  • Obligation Free:  IT Audits are generally obligation free, meaning you can get one when it suits you and for whatever reason. Whether you just want to see how you current IT Provider is performing, or you’re looking to bring on a new provider, you’ll gain greater perspective and be able to make more informed decisions about your tech moving forward.
  • Opportunity for Reduced Costs: A key benefit of an IT Audit is uncovering unnecessary costs related to business technology – meaning you might end up saving money by dropping any ill-suited software or hardware – or implementing solutions that will reduce costs in support, or early replacement of poor quality products.
  • Greater Understanding of Your Business Tech: With a report that outlines the ins and outs of your business tech, you’ll be able to have a greater understanding of what you have in place & its purpose. You’ll also have a clearer understanding of why you might be experiencing pain, and how you can adjust your technology accordingly, to better facilitate your goals. The priority status within the recommendations is also a fantastic way for you to confidently create a roadmap & budget for your technology needs.
  • Improved Business & Greater Peace-Of-Mind: If you decide to follow the recommendations outlined in your report, your business is sure to see sufficient improvements thanks to better suited tech that supports current operations, heighten productivity, greater security, and your future goals.

…pretty good, right?
